Summary

Holder: The pump pit was 20 feet long, 12 feet wide and 15 feet deep approximately. At commencement of installation the river was 20 feet lower than shown here and the workmen had to race the rising river waters to erect the pump pit walls. Some mornings the water would be within 3 inches of submerging the work.
