Historical information

Oakden Hills Station is just south of the Woocalla East West Line. It is 170 kilometres north of Port Augusta, between Lakes Gairdner and Torrens. In 1851 Oakden and Hulkes found the location but the vermin infested land was not a good site for a sheep run once drought hit. They both moved interstate and it was pastoralist Allan McFarlane Jnr. who named the station Oakden Hills. In conjunction with Osmond Gilles, Phillip Oakden had been an early importer of Merino sheep. When the government legislated against squatters in this area Thorold Grant, Butler and Milne purchased the lease plus South Gap Station, creating 1,100 square miles of unimproved country. Oakden Hillls was then sold to W. B. Sells and Co who also merged it with other stations. Kidman Brothers later owned Oakden Hills and the vermin proof fence line improved the land. Today (2010) it is owned by the Hunt family.
