Summary

A group of officers at the Oaklands Army Camp. The names of the men were not included with the original, but were identified through the publication of the photo in 1937 (see 'History' below for the actual names). A detailed article about the camp can be found in 'The Advertiser', Friday 21 April 1905, page 6. See also B 23145 for a photograph of the same group with their hats on.

Historical information

The photo was reproduced in 'The Chronicle', Thursday 4 February 1937, page 36, with the following caption: 'OLD TIME SOLDIERS. Officers of the Tenth Australian Infantry Regiment (Adelaide Rifles) in camp at Brighton about 30 years ago. There are 27 officers in the group, of whom 13 are now dead. Ten participated in the Great War, four of whom are now dead. Seated: The late Captain John Donnell. the late Captain J. H. Stapleton, the late Captain J. E. Gooden, the late Lieut.-Colonel J. V. O'Loghlin, Brig.-General S. Price Weir, the late Captain I. H. S. Olifent, Captain J. G. Morley, the late Major F. M. Blair, the Ia(e Captain C. M. Billin. In front: Lieut. A. Stacey. Second row: The late Captain E. Richman, Major J. Hansen, Captain G. E. Hawkes, Colonel Walter Dollman, Captain A. F. Cornish. Lieut.-Colonel M. F. Beevor, Lieutenant H. M. Weir, Major P. H. Mitchell, the late Captain W. C. Medlyn, the late Captain F. F. Wholohan, the late Major W. R. McKeevor. Back row: Brigadier E. M. Ralph (now Commandant of Queensland), Lieutenant Nordman, the late Major E. C. Oldham, Lieutenant S. L. Shepherd, Lieutenant E. D. Hughes, Lieutenant W. F. O Grote.' This has provided the identification of the group which wasn't previously available. Note that the ranks assigned in 1937 were in many cases not the ranks held at the time the photo was taken. [It has also been suggested that the man identified as Colonel J.V. O'Loughlin may actually be Thomas Hyland Smeaton.].
