Summary

The York Hotel, Rundle Street, Adelaide. 'In 1839 two sisters, the Misses Bathgate, newly arrived from England, erected a tent and took in boarders on the site now known as Foy & Gibson's corner. Later on a shingled roof building called the 'York Hotel' was erected, and rapidly became the centre of Adelaide's aristocracy. Rebuilt in 1868, the new structure boasted 46 rooms, and five bathrooms with hot and cold showers, a decided innovation in those days! The old building was demolished in 1909, making way for the 'Grand Central'. Here a brilliant State dinner was tendered to the Prince of Wales on July 13, 1920. Six years later the building was absorbed by Foy & Gibson's.'
