Summary

Commercial Hotel, Grenfell Street, Adelaide. 'The Commercial Hotel once stood on the site we now know as Brookman Buildings. It was first licensed round about 1839, the licensee being James Masters, who ultimately became a successful pastoralist. It was he who laid out the town of Saddleworth, in the 1840's, so named after his birthplace in Yorkshire. He also established the town of Riverton, where he built 'Saddleworth Lodge'. The Commercial Hotel was delicensed in 1885 and demolished in 1896. Commercial Lane, on the east side of Brookman Buildings, probably commemorates the old inn.' The land in Grenfell Street was originally owned by William Younghusband and passed to his daughter Louisa Younghusband upon his death in 1863, and she in turn left the land to her son William Gore Daly. The land was sold in 1885.
