Summary

First teacher at Hindmarsh Island. John Margetson was the first teacher appointed to the Hindmarsh Island school when it opened in 1864 in the Wesleyan Chapel with 16 students. He taught there for nine years, during which time a new school house was erected on a Government reserve. He is depicted with his wife Sarah. A researcher has provided the following supplementary information. John and Sarah Margetson arrived in South Australia on board the ship 'Success' in 1848. When student numbers fell at Hindmarsh Island, Margetson's appointment was cancelled (see South Australian Chronicle and Weekly Mail, 14 March 1874, p. 14). Having lost his income, and not being allocated a pension from the Education Department, the couple became destitute (South Australian Register, 23 November 1875, p. 5). Margetson died 12 January 1881, aged 87, and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Hindmarsh Island Cemetery. Sarah Margetson applied to the Destitute Asylum in 1883 and died in Adelaide, 31 July 1889, aged 90 (see GRG 28/5).

General notes

Prior to May 2020 this photograph was identified as 'First teacher at Hindmarsh Island - probably Maria Newell.' Maria Louisa Newell was born in 1863. She was appointed as provisional teacher at Hindmarsh Island for 12 months in June 1886. She married Alfred Joseph Abbott on 9 November 1887 at Encounter Bay. The photograph depicts a woman of a much older generation. The teacher that followed John Margetson, the first teacher appointed at the school, was William Palmer Phillips, 1842-1923. Photographs of him are available in online family history databases.
