The name given for this Old Colonist is from the original index to this collection which consisted only of surnames. Many names in the original index have been found to be misspelled, and it is not yet known whether this name is correct, or whether it is the woman's maiden or married name. It is recommended that any use of this name and portrait combination should include a reference to these uncertainties.

A prior identification of this woman as Elizabeth Spiller, c. 1820-1919; nee Hamlyn, was rescinded following the publication of a photograph of Elizabeth Spiller in old age being included in an article 'Elizabeth Spiller: A Researcher's Story' by Neil Thomas in The South Australian Genealogist, vol. 49, no. 2, May 2022, p. 34. As the author noted, 'The length of the woman's ear profile does not match that of Elizabeth's in her family's photographs (Elizabeth had quite long ears).'
