Summary

Probably Rachel Wilkey, c. 1816-1895; nee Way, married Charles Richard Wilkey, then Edward Barnett. Arrived in South Australia in January 1837 on board the ship the "Coromandel". Resided in Hope Valley, Modbury.

The identity of this Old Colonist has not been confirmed by State Library staff to date. Research indicates that the person described in this record is probably the person depicted in the portrait. It is recommended that any use of this identification and portrait combination should include a reference to this uncertainty.

"Charles Richard Wilkey", the supposed husband who accompanied Rachel Way on the "Coromandel", was using an assumed name. Family historian Suzanne Denny has determined that Rachel Way's legal husband, who she married at St Mary's Church in Battersea in 1832, was also named Charles Richard Wilkey. He was transported to Tasmania for seven years in 1835 and remained in Tasmania until his death in 1876. Another family historian Jan Polkinghorne makes a compelling case that Charles Richard Wilkey who emigrated to South Australia with Rachel Way was her step-father Nimrod Fry. The assumed Charles Richard Wilkey and Rachel Wilkey went through a marriage ceremony in Adelaide in 1860.
