J. Frost designed the hospital and it was built by Messrs. March and Jaffrey. The Foundation stone was laid with Masonic Honours on 9th January 1877 by Mr H.T. Morris, representing Mr F.H. Dutton, the first donor of 2,500 pounds towards the new hospital. In September 1877, the property was duly invested in the hands of Trustees, and the hospital opened on 1st November 1877. In 1880 the land and houses adjoining the hospital were purchased. In 1885 a verandah was erected. In 1891 an iron stable shed was erected. Nurses can be seen on the verandah.
