Summary

[On front of photograph] 'Victoria Bridge, Adelaide, South Australia.' [General description] The photograph was taken soon after its construction. A horse and carriage, possibly a wagonette, stands on the bridge. The River Torrens is, at the time of this photo, a small channel consisting of a series of waterholes running past the city. The main stream ran invisibly beneath the gravelly river-bed during summer months, but in winter, it flooded. This situation persisted until 1871 when the weir damming the Torrens, which created the Torrens Lake, was built. The photograph was taken by Henry Davis and is part of the R.J. Noye Collection at the Art Gallery of S.A.
