Historical information

Benjamin Herschel Babbage (1814-1878) worked as an engineer in England and Italy. Married Laura Jones (1817-1899) in 1839 and emigrated to South Australia in 1851. He performed engineering and geological survey work, and owned a vineyard and fruit trees at St Mary's. Started building a house there using untested techniques in 1875 that began disintegrating after completion and which was nicknamed 'Babbage's Castle'. Their daughter Ada Rosalie Babbage (1855-1936) married William Daykin Clare (1852-1922) in 1881 and lived at the 'Castle' until 1896. Their son Francis Henry Clare (1884-1942) married Gladys Kingsborough in 1914 and ran a dairy farm on the property until 1936.
