Summary

Adelaide Railway Station showing Paliament House in the centre of the background. Adelaide's first railway station opened in 1856 to serve the broad gauge line between Adelaide and Port Adelaide and was the first government owned and operated railway in the British Empire. The original station handled passengers, livestock and freight. Livestock was unloaded adjacent to the markets and abattoirs on the corner of West Terrace, opposite the Newmarket Hotel.
