Summary

Heinicke's Grand Orchestra. According to an article by Joyce Gibberd, 'In 1893 Charles Cawthorne's Adelaide Orchestra had become Heinicke's Grand Orchestra, with forty-five players; it soon became the most popular of the local musical groups. Heinicke planned to provide popular programmes, then to cultivate the taste of players and audience for orchestral music'. Hermann Heinike was born in Dresden in 1863 into a family of great musical tradition. He was Deputy Conductor of the Berlin Concert House Orchestra. He answered an advertisement for a violin teacher at the Adelaide College of Music and was chosen from 124 applicants, although for small renumeration. In 1898 the College of Music became the nucleus of the newly founded Conservatorium of Music. With the advent of World War I Heinike was subject to a great deal of abuse because of his German heritage. When he died at his North Adelaide home there was only a very small obituary in one of Adelaide's two newspapers although he was nominated as one of the fifteen notable musicians of the period.
