Summary

Caltowie mill was erected in 1881. Local farmers bought shares in the mill and it was so successful that a rail siding was built. It was sold to John Both in 1894 and he ran it until the 1920s. He named it Roller Flour Mills. The mill operated until 1947. During the polio epidemic of 1938 John Both's nephew Edward Thomas Both designed a cheap plywood iron lung which sold for one hundred pounds unlike the American version which sold for two thousand pounds. According to a descendant, the flour mill belonged to John Henry Both, the senior partner and mill manager until 1928 when he retired to Adelaide. The firm of J H Both & Co. continued until the late 1940s, and it was sold in 1949. The descendant also notes that Edward Thomas Both also produced the first direct reading portable cardiograph. Edward Thomas Both who designed the wooden 'iron lung' (cabinet respirator) was the nephew of J H Both, son of his brother Alex.
