General notes

An alternative history of the organ appears on the back of the photo. Mr. William Saunders, 81 Grenfell Street, states that the date of the photograph should be about 1899. Mr Sanders 'opened' the organ on its installation in the hall. The instrument (built by Hill, England), was originally imported at a cost of about 350 pounds, and given to the Norwood Wesleyan Church by G.P. Harris (of Harris, Scarfe $ Co.). When a larger organ was built for the church (by Dodd of Adelaide), the Hill organ passed into the hands of Dodd, who, after making certain alterations to it, made arrangements for its housing in the Y.M.C.A. Hall. The instrument was used for concerts, recitals and student practise, and remained in the hall for about four years. Dodd sold the organ to the Malvern Methodist Church, where it remained in use until a larger instrument was built there by Roberts (Adelaide). Roberts disposed of the displaced instrument to a purchaser in Geelong, Victoria.
