Summary

First members of Penola Institute Committee which was established in 1862. The committee included GB Scott, SM, Fr. JE Tennison Woods and the Riddoch Brothers. Towards the end of 1862 proceedings began to establish a Public Library and Mechanics' Institute. Premises were rented for a reading room and lecture hall until the Library and Institute building was constructed. By the 1880's it had the second largest collection of books outside Adelaide
