Summary

First U.F.S. procession in Commercial St. West, Mt. Gambier September 1904 (possibly 1916). The United Friendly Society was established in 1916 to provide assistance to members in the event of sickness, funeral and insurance expenses. This followed the British example of starting lodges for organisations and guilds following the Industrial Revolution. The UFS Mount Gambier included members of the Ancient Order of Foresters, The Rechabites, Druids, Hibernians, Australasian Catholic Benefit Society, Australian Natives Association and the Sons of Temperance. The photograph shows the band-led procession and groups of participants
