Summary

Lithograph of the proposed 'The Cathedral Church of St. Francis Xavier - Adelaide S.A.", engraved 'on stone by E. Meyers'. This is not the cathedral that was built - see 'The Register', 12 April 1851, page 20, for a note on the proposed cathedral. The following lengthy note appears on the back of the lithograph - "Projected Cathedral of St Francis Xavier.This Cathedral never had any reality outside its designer's (Adelaide architect Lambeth) mind other than its being lithographed by Meyer and printed in ? Any further exact history of this picture cannot be traced. A Catholic cathedral in Adelaide had been discussed since 1846. In 1848 it was wrongly said to be then in the sourse of construction. In 1848 Dr. Murphy held a meeting to discuss the means of erecting the much talked of Cathedral. Five hundred pounds were subscribed and a pence weekly collection decided upon. A Francis Xavier fund was started in February of that year. In 1850 and 1851 the St Francis Xavier Church fund went on - but not very successfully perhaps because of the 1851-52 gold rush which affected Dr Murphy's finances very seriously. When in 1856 the stone of the present Cathedral was laid, and the first portion of the Cathedral opened in 1858, thisdesign of Lambeth's was not used. One cannot be sorry, since the present Cathedral (which has had many architects - Hansom, Pugin, Kingston, Woods, Bagot etc.) is far more beautiful and much more correctly proportioned than Lambeth's conception. On 10 February 1954, Mr W.H. Bagot expressed the tentative opinion that is is more likely to be Hanson's plan than that of Lambeth.
