Summary

Bird in Hand Mine at Woodside. Photograph shows building formerly housing Cornish pumping engine used at the mine. The mine was re-opened in 1934 and view shows water being pumped out by a "Pomona" pumping engine . See B 13387. The Cornish pumping engine had 4 foot diameter cylinder, 6 foot stroke, and pumped about a million gallons of water per day. The intake valve is cut off midway through the power stroke allowing the steam already in the cylinder to expand through the rest of the stroke to a lower pressure. This results in the capture of a greater proportion of energy and less heat being lost to the condenser
