Summary

[General description] 'The 'Medway', a four-masted steel barque built in 1902 by A. McMillan & Son, Dumbarton, Scotland, moored at an unknown wharf. She was first named 'Ama Beganakoa' of Monte Video and later (1910) acquired by Devitt & Moore's Ocean Training Ships Ltd. for use as a training ship and also in the wheat, wool and nitrate trade. During WW1 she was converted to an oil carrier at Hong Kong, but the conversion was not completed until the war ended so she was used as a harbour oiler in Singapore under the name 'Myr Shell' before being sold for scrap in 1933. The note on the back of the photograph clearly refers to an earlier ship. [On back of photograph] 'Visited South Australia in 1846 (Vide Arch. 908)'
