Summary

The "Remonstrant" visited South Australia in 1891 and 1897. She was an iron barque built in Sunderland in 1878 weighing 1078 gross tons. She sailed from Liverpool to Port Adelaide in 1887 and from La Plata to Wallaroo in 1891.

Historical information

Born in October of 1844 at Ireton in the County of Cumberland, England, Richard Knight, then presiding in Workington, Cumbria, England, was commissioned as the Captain of the Remonstrant at the age of 24, and sailed her until she was sold to her Norweigen owners some 20 years later. A letter dated 3rd June 1903 sent from R. Conway & Son, Ship Owners, of 20 Tower Buildings West, Water Street Liverpool reads "...Captain Richard Knight had been in command of the Remonstrant from 23rd May 1883 until 20th May 1903, a period of 20 years... The vessel has been sold and as we have no other sailing ships, we regret having to part with his services". Richard served his apprenticeship with the Owners, and then at sea. The Remonstrant was eventually sunk by a German submarine toward the end of World War I, about 100 miles off the coast of West Ireland, while making her way from Newport Rhode Island to Iceland with a cargo of coal. A newspaper report (The Australian Morning Post??) states that under the Norweigan owners, the Remonstrant landed a cargo of horses and railway lines in Adelaide. The crew apparently mutinied, and it took the bosun and crew some time to round up the rebels and get them back aboard. A painting of the ship in the collection of relatives has the letters 'NSW' on, which was assumed to be the nautical term for Newcastle, UK.

Richard Knight attained Masters Certificate No 81,307, granted 7th August 1868 at Belfast, N Ireland.
