Summary

Telephone Exchange at the G.P.O., Adelaide. It opened in 1883 with 27 subscribers and within three years it had 700 subscribers. By 1894 demand for the new service required a new multiple switchboard. As seen in this photograph the telephone exchange operators were female having rapidly usurped the male operators
