See Dictionary of Australian Artists Online for details on the photographer. The women are following tradition and riding side-saddle with their legs to the left. After the 1860s chemical dyes were used for material and strong colours were now affordable. Velveteen and sateen and silk fabrics were popular. The ladies seen in this photograph are wearing riding habits that are longer than the normal hem length. They are wearing hats, one with ribbons attached at the back. A fitted riding jacket finishes the costume
