Summary

Smelters, Port Pirie. The BHP smelter was built in 1889 alongside an existing one built by the British Broken Hill Blocks mining company. In 1897 the smelter in Broken Hill was closed down and all smelting operations were concentrated in Port Pirie. Just after this photograph was taken the Zinc Corporation Limited (ZC) registered in Melbourne began treating zinc bearing tailings at Broken Hill. Later the smelter was taken over by a major joint venture of Broken Hill based companies, Broken Hill Associated Smelters
