Summary

Photograph of a watercolour showing a family group identified on the back of the photograph as being painted at Port Arthur, Tasmania in about 1835. This dating of the painting is problematic because James Weston and Miriam Peacock married in Adelaide, South Australia in 1841 when Miriam was about 20 years old. She had arrived in South Australia with her parents and siblings on board the ship the Glenalvon from London in December 1838. If it is the Weston family it dates from the mid-1840s. In 1859 advertisements in the Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser James Weston is described as 'consulting surgeon ... late of Adelaide, (formerly Assistant Colonial Surgeon, Port Arthur, Tasmania)'. Miriam Weston's death notice in The Argus, 9 April 1901, describe her as 'relict of the late Dr James Weston'.

Artist not identified.

[On back of photograph] 'Dr James Weston, his wife (formerly Miss Miriam Peacock, daughter of William Peacock), and their daughter Fanny (later Mrs. Joseph Kirkpatrick). According to Miss L. Peacock Dr Weston practised medicine in S.A. before going to Tasmania where the husband and wife separated, the daughter going with Mother. Painted by a convict at Port Arthur c. 1835 / Original donated by Miss L. Peacock'.
