Summary

[General description] Steam train crossing a railway bridge across the floodplain of the Neales River (near Oodnadatta). The bridge was built to replace a section of surface track that was prone to being washed away by periodic flooding. Of lattice steel construction it was built by a workforce of approximately 350 men, at least one of whom died working in the extreme heat. It was strengthened in 1926 to carry heavier trains. See B 11060 for a close view of the bridge and track. [On back of photograph] '653 miles from Adelaide. 1900 feet long, 19 spans each at 100 feet'
