Summary

Powell's Hotel Kalgoorlie, Hindley Street, south side, August 29th 1941, Hotel frontage is 17 yards. The car parked in front is a 1934 Terraplane Coupe with registration SA 178-743. This hotel existed since 1845 and has had various names - Star, Galatea, Kalgoorlie Hotel, Hotel Mediterranean, Old Mariner Hotel, Hotel Performance, The City Hotel, Rio International.

General notes

The Kalgoorlie was a meeting place for many groups of people. These included the journalists, photographers and printers from News Ltd in North Terrace. The groups of migrants who started businesses in the street also met there. In the 1930s and 1940s there were mainly Greek businesses, Liascos the butcher, Kratsis the Star Grocery, Dontas the electrician. Interspersed were mens' clubs from the various parts of Greece and Macedonia, including the Omonia Club and others. In the photo the shop next door was a luggage business owned by the Adelsons etc. Alfred James Powell was the Kalgoorlie's licensee from 1926 until he died in 1928. He also had the licence of the Royal Oak Hotel in the west end of Hindley Street for many years. His wife Zacharula Powell was the licensee from 1928 and then after her death, her son-in-law and daughter Herbert Christopher and Edna Isobel Kennedy. [from information provided].
