Summary

Railway Station, Port Adelaide probably in the late 1850's copied from a faded photograph. Note on front of photograph says "Should auld acquaintance be forgot". A hotel and the masts of ships at the wharf can be seen in the distance behind the station building. A researcher believes that at left is the Railway Hotel of 1856 (the year the Adelaide-Port railway opened), believed to be the earliest known view of it. It is also possible that the signage on the on the building that is 2nd right from the two-storey Railway Hotel says 'RAILWAY' in the top centre and 'EATING HOUSE' on the left hand side and possibly on the right. The low-lying buildings either side of it are also of interest, as it's known that buildings built early on were later surrounded by buildings on a higher level as the former swamps were filled in. In fact, St Vincent St and the Port Rd and later the railway line served as embankments to protect the town from high tides. The 'road' bordered by the post and rail fence is today's Port/Commercial Rd.
