Historical information

This building, located in Todd Street, Port Adelaide, was the home the Cook family (Percy and Gladys Cook and children Clive and Valerie) in the mid 1950s-1960s. The Cook family were caretakers of the Mission and lived in 7-roomed accommodation above the Mission. The building to the right of the Mission, enscribed ".... Institute" later became the town dance hall. The ground floor of the Mission comprised the Padre's office, large kitchen (fund-raising lunches were prepared there), library, womens toilets, dance hall, canteen, storeroom, table tennis area, two or three full-sized billiard tables, a reading room, film projection room, mens toilets, Secretary's office and the Chapel. There was also a cellar which was used to store magazines published in different languages. Percy Cook maintained the billiard tables and the dance floor. He operated the projector on film nights and purchased canteen supplies. The Mission underwent reconstruction in 1961. The photograph shows a two storey bluestone building situated on Todd Street. It was expanded over the next few years to include a canteen and reading room. A chapel dedicated to St Andrew was created from the Mission's original dining room and a separate concert hall was erected on adjacent property. In 1914 the complex was gutted by fire.
