Thomas Playford
No.1061 Lieutenant Thomas Playford was born at Norton Summit on 5 July 1896, the grandson of South Australian Premier, Thomas Playford 1837-1915. Thomas was working for his father as a gardener at the time of his attestation in May 1915 and being under age required his father's permission to enlist. A member of the 27th Battalion he served in France and was wounded in action on 5 November 1916, receiving a "severe" gun shot wound to the abdomen. He returned to duty in 1917 and was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in January 1919 and Lieutenant in April 1919 before returning to Australia aboard the Ypiranga in July 1919. In 1933 Playford was elected the Liberal and Country League Member for Murray and entered the South Australian House of Assembly. He was elected leader of the party and Premier in November 1938. He was to be Premier for 26 years and 266 days; the longest serving South Australian Premier.
