Church

Church

Small church, thought to be at Navan. Previously thought to have been at Kapunda. Navan Roman Catholic cemetery is located at Riverton. A note on the back of this photograph says that according to Mrs O'Donnell of Riverton this church was demolished in 1876 and the stone was used for the building of the Catholic Church of St John and St Paul at Tarlee. Tarlee came into existence as a stopover point on the road between Kapunda and Burra mines

Hamley Bridge

Hamley Bridge

[On front of photograph] 'Hamley Bridge, near Adelaide, South Australia.' [General description]The River Light Railway Bridge, at the town of Hamley Bridge. The town, and subsequently the bridge, was named after the Acting Governor Colonel Francis Hamley, whose wife laid the bridge's foundation stone on July 25th,1868. The northern railway was extended from Roseworthy to Tarlee during 1868 and this bridge, said to be the highest in the state, was built over the River Light. The tiny figures of two men standing on the bridge give an idea of its size.

From left, standing: Wilf Dowden, Harry Jones, Hilda Jones, Mrs Pohlner, Mr Pohlner, Mr Jones senior, Milford Crouch, Reg Crouch. Children in front: Max Dowden (born 1927), Claire Jones, Doug Jones. A researcher has provided the following information: Mr Pohlner is August Wilhelm Friedrich Pohlner (1858-1948), who lived at Tooralie Station, Hallett S.A. at the time of the photo. August Pohlner had been a very successful farmer in the Hallett area since 1878. Mrs Pohlner is Clara Brady (1871-1949), wife of August since 1890. Hilda Jones (1891-1960) is August and Clara's eldest of their 10 children. Henry is her husband, a returned soldier, living at Nackara S.A. Julia and Doug are their children, born 1927 and 1927 respectively. Max and Reg Crouch are brothers, possibly living at Tarlee SA, as they were in 1939, according to the S.A. Voters' Lists. August's father, Carl, came to SA in 1847 on ship "Hermann von Beckerath", aged 16, with his father and 3 brothers, aged 7 to 12. They settled in Bethany. Carl's fourth brother, Alexander, stayed in Germany with his pregnant mother, who was aged in her 40s. Alexander was only 3. In 1856 Alexander came to Australia on ship "Vesta" with his sister, Auguste, as well as her husband and baby. The following year, their mother arrived with the baby (now aged 10) who was born a few weeks after the men left for SA in 1847. She had never seen her father and brothers. The sons were now grown men, some married with children. When Alexander grew up, he married Maria Behn and they lived for many years in the Dimboola area.
