A welcome for Aidan de Brune in Adelaide

A welcome for Aidan de Brune in Adelaide

A small crowd of well wishers stand with Aidan de Brune, a man who is walking around Australia after his arrival in Adelaide; the premises of the Imperial Hotel, King William Street can be seen in the background. A researcher has provided the following information: "In the event, de Brune took two and a half years to complete the walk. He was laid up in Burketown Hospital in the Gulf Country of north western Queensland for about two months, in February and March 1922, and at other times did not walk, because of illness or because he chose to remain in a town and give a lecture on his travels. He was away from Sydney for 897 days, of which he walked on 572 days. In October 1923, de Brune was near Ceduna, along the Great Australian Bight, on his way back to Sydney, with about 1500 miles to walk. A journalist, J. T. Beckett, who had met de Brune in Darwin, during the walk, wrote in The Northern Standard, Darwin: 'When you see him you want to get away from him. When you speak to him you don't want him to go away from you. He is a man and a gentleman up and down, and a library of information. He is a sport among sportsmen and a man of whom the Australian Journalists' Association should be proud, for he has not spared himself to get copy. Aidan de Brune has not finished his walk but should he never move another yard further, he will have put up a record that few, if any, will ever attempt to equal.' A biography of Aidan de Brune and a brief bibliography of his writings can be found in Ten Australian Authors by Aidan de Brune, available from Project Gutenberg Australia.

Mr. J.H. Flannagan of the Imperial Hotel, Grenfell Street, Adelaide photographed welcoming Aidan de Brune, who had walked around Australia to Adelaide; he is handing over a piece of paper which could be a cheque outside the premises of the hotel where a small crowd of spectators stand watching. A researcher has provided the following information from the diary of Aidan de Brune (a pseudonym of Herbert Charles Cull), documenting his walk around Australia, from the entry for 23 November 1923, day 795 of the journey: 'To leave Sydney on foot, to walk ten thousand miles (more or less) around Australia, calling at all the ports en route on the four coasts, and to return to Sydney, was the task set me'. The diary is available to read online from Project Gutenberg Australia - 'Record diary of a walk around Australia' by Aidan de Brune.

The Astral steamboat

The Astral steamboat

View of the Astral, a twin screw scow which was launched in Forster, N.S.W. on 18 April 1908 [SMH, p.8] for the N.S.W. coastal trade. After the engines were fitted in Sydney, the steamboat was trialled on 14 August 1908 [SMH 15 Aug 1908, p.14]. She sank carrying coal on 7 April 1924 [Port Macquarie News & Hastings River Advocate 12 April 1924 p.5]. According to a researcher, from the shipping notices in newspapers there is no evidence that it ever came to S.A. Seen here she is waiting at the end of a short jetty which carries a metal rail track, with scaffolding at the right of the jetty indicating that a structure is to be erected. Further searching by members of the Light Railway Research Society of Australia has revealed that this photo appeared in the Sydney Mail 11 June 1913, p.14, captioned "Unloading timber for the buildings at Captain's Point". The adjacent article is "Building the Naval College", that is HMAS Creswell at Jervis Bay. Another researcher adds that the short jetty was the contractor's jetty, and the structure at the right was the powerhouse.
