Woodburn Homestead

Woodburn farmhouse between Strathalbyn and Milang was built in 1862 by Matthew Rankine son of William Rankine. (Diary held in Library on Microfilm). Matthew retired to "Braemar" near Strathalbyn in 1892, son Melville lived in Woodburn until his death in 1920. The house was restores in ca. 1990.

Views include street scenes in Adelaide and at the Botanic Gardens, Waterfall Gully, Morialta, and Strathalbyn. Several photographs may be of Aboriginal men and women of the Point McLeay area. The album includes nineteenth century views of Melbourne, Launceston & Hobart, Brisbane and Maryborough in Queensland and other places abroad including Ceylon, Malta, New Caledonia, and New Zealand. Some of these are by the noted photographers, Horatio Agius (Malta), Poul C. Poulsen (Queensland) and Allan Hughan (New Caledonia). The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

Postcard collection of Emily Sophia Groom

A collection of postcards and greeting cards collected by Emily Sophia Groom (nee Grovermann) during the early 1900s, with many cards depicting early SA. The inscription inside the album states "E S Grovermann, Blyth, 29-5-1906". Emily Groom was born in 1877 at Clare and married Harry Rowe (his mother's surname) Groom in 1931. Emily was aged 45 when she married and did not have children of her own. Locations in the postcards include Blyth and Clare, Tanunda, Gumeracha, Victor Harbor and Port Elliot, Adelaide, North Adelaide, and assorted interstate and international locations [See individual records for selected digitised postcards, which may be viewed online].

Old Primitive Methodist Church, near Hartley, photographed in 1941 when it was used as a barn. A rough map has been drawn on the back of the photograph showing the location which is on the corner of roads leading to Woodchester to Callington, and Mount Barker to Wellington. The small old building has a pitched roof and a small porch. Hartley is a ghost town located along the Bremer River on the Strathalbyn to Callington Road. The Methodist Church was built in 1856. The settlement once had a post office, school and creamery.

Point Malcolm Lighthouse

Point Malcolm Lighthouse

[General description] The Point Malcolm Lighthouse and keeper's cottage stands on a stark rocky outcrop on the eastern side of the narrows between Lake Alexandria and Lake Albert. It was built to assist shipping of the Murray River trade with expecations of its future growth. It was built by local Strathalbyn builder Richard Trenouth and its light was first displayed on February 1st, 1878. It is probably the only inland lighthouse in Australia.

Avenue Road, Stirling West. Stirling was named by Peter Dowding Prankerd after his close friend Edward Stirling MLC who lived at Strathalbyn. The photograph shows buildings on the right hand side of Avenue Road leading down to Mount Barker Road. The building nearest the main road is possibly the fire station

Paul Foelsche

Paul Foelsche

Paul Foelsche, Inspector, arrived from Germany and later became a mounted police trooper. He arrested a member of Captain Thunderbolt's gang. He shared a good rapport with the Aboriginals. He left his posting at Strathalbyn to go to the Northern Territory where he enjoyed a long career. His interests included dentistry, amoury, an interest in Aboriginal culture and photography.

Sir John Lancelot Stirling

Sir John Lancelot Stirling

Sir John Lancelot Stirling, politician, cattle and sheep breeder and grazier was born at Strathalbyn, studied at Trinity College in England, was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in London. He returned to South Australia to breed sheep and cattle. He became the President of the Legislative Council from 1901-32. He was a director of mining and pastoral companies and introduced polo to South Australia.

Charles Taplin

Charles Goodenough Taplin died in 1887. He was the incumbent priest present at the foundation stone laying at Church of St John the Evangelist at Maitland in 1874. Charles Taplin was also the Minister in Charge the Meadows Mission of the Strathalbyn Church in 1869-1872.

Dr. E. Waddy

Dr. E. Waddy

Dr. E. Waddy: Born at Dudley, England on 27 August 1815. Came to South Australia in 1846 as a Medical Practitioner and settled at Kapunda. He married Jane Russell on 11 January 1847 at Trinity Church, Adelaide. He died at Strathalbyn on 31 October 1878.
