27th Battalion Football Team
Members of the 27th Battalion football team which defeated the 10th Battalion team, 10 goals 5 to 4 goals 5, on Adelaide Oval in front of a crowd of 35,000 spectators on 19 July 1919 as part of Peace Day celebrations. The 'Chronicle' lists the players in the team and the following have been identified by a researcher as follows: Back row (from left): unknown, H.J Harden, C.C. Eldridge, B. Donnell [Albert George?], unknown, F. S. Nelson, S.S. Woods, A.W. Colman, W.R.G Colman, unknown. Middle row (from left): C.S. Kneebone, unknown, [Captain P.G. Bice], C.L. Dayman (captain), R.G. This photo was published in the newspaper 'Sport' (Adelaide, S.A.), Thursday 1 April 1915, page 6, with the caption 'One of the Y.M.C.A. Marquees at Oaklands Camp'. It has been suggested that the man on the front row, holding gloves, no cap, and with his foot on the steps to the stage, is Harold Leslie Boyce who served with the 27th Battalion, A Company; and the man three to his left is Lieutenant Lawrence Anare Clyde (compare with B 45087), and the man with the moustache (behind and to the left of Clyde) is John Joseph Harrington [an obituary appeared in the 'Naracoorte Herald' Friday 9 May 1941, page 4.) Port Pirie Ladies' Rowing Club
On the afternoon of Saturday 2 April 1921 the South Australian Ladies' Rowing Association held a test race to decide who should represent the state in the ladies interstate four-oar event to be rowed at Launceston, Tasmania, on 25 April 1921. A crew selected from metropolitan ladies' clubs was challenged by a crew consisting of M. Guerin(bow), Olga Graske(2), Eva Bulling(3), Roma Legg(stroke) and J. Murphy(cox) from the Port Pirie club. The Port Pirie crew pictured won the race and the right to represent South Australia in Launceston where they beat crews from Tasmania and Queensland to win the competition.
