Ted Packer was reported to be an enthusiastic amateur photographer when he was twenty-one years of age (The Narracoorte Herald, 23 October 1903). Seven years later he was adverting his services as a photographer in Tailem Bend, in addition to being a hairdresser, tobacconist, news agent, cycle agent and picture framer. The collection is probably a mixture of Packer and Wiese family photographs, photographs taken by Ted Packer as a photography enthusiast who gave magic lantern presentations to the public, and glass plate negatives of photographs taken by Ted Packer as a regional professional photographer. There are also a few photographs taken by others after Ted's death.

Views include some landmark buildings and street scenes in Melbourne, in King William Street Adelaide, and near Gumeracha, as well as copies of portraits of Governors Sir John Hindmarsh and Sir William Jervois and Rev. Daisy M. Bates

Daisy M. Bates, worker among the Aborigines. Known as "The Protector of Aborigines", she studied their life, history, culture, rites, beliefs and customs. She did not try to teach or convert them. She fought against the policy to assimilate Aboriginal people into white Australian society and resisted the sexual exploitation of Aboriginal women by white men. She lived in a tent amongst them and was noted for her strict Edwardian fashion. In this photograph she is wearing a tightly fitted suit, high collared shirt, tie and turban with her famous round framed glasses.

Studio portrait of Alexander Charles Kelly, MD (1811 - 1877) who arrived in South Australia in 1840 on the 'Baboo'. He was born in Scotland and after arriving in Adelaide became the twelfth medical practitioner on the medical register of South Australia. He was a winegrower and medical practitioner and owned land at Morphett Vale and McLaren Vale.

Sir Ross Smith Memorial

Sir Ross Smith Memorial

Sir Ross Smith Memorial. Sir Ross Smith with his brother Keith, he flew from England to Australia in 28 days in 1919 and won the £10,000 prize as the first to fly the distance in less than 30 days. He tragically died in 1922 in a plane crash in England while testing an aircraft for a planned around the world flight. Following his death the public was quick to donate to a "shilling fund", opened by the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, to provide a fitting memorial. Portrait panel at the back of memorial depicts Sir Keith Smith and the two mechanics (Bennett and Shiers) who accompanied the brothers on the epic flight.

ALBUM: A collection of ten views depicting homes built by the South Australian pioneer families of Featherstone and Kearne which include the entrance, drive, and premises of 'Oaklands', built by John Wilson Kearne, and 'Brighton House', built by Michael Featherstone. John Ridley, the inventor of 'The Stripper' harvesting machine was a fellow emigrant, friend, and neighbouring settler; the album includes portraits of John and his wife Mary, a diagram and sketch of the original machine, and a view of the Ridley's first house at Hindmarsh, near Adelaide.
