Heath Nash was a cook, born in Adelaide and was part of John McDouall Stuart's successful expedition through the centre of Australia.


John Bentham Neales
John Bentham Neales was a businessman and a politician in the early days of South Australia and is remembered as "The Father of Mining". In 1841 he worked the Wheal Gawler silver lead deposit at Glen Osmond, then Montacute. The company later opened the copper mine at Burra which made him a considerable fortune. He helped found the South Australian Mining Association.

John Shaw Neilson, photograph copied by J.K. Moir from his negative of another photographer's original. Neilson was a poet born at Penola who became a farmer and roadmender always living in poverty. His technique of poetry was self taught following only two years of official schooling. His friend James Devaney said "he was the poor working man who left us a legacy of endless wealth". John Shaw Neilson was 37 years old in this photograph.

Dr William Peel Nesbitt
Dr William Peel Nesbitt (1850-1894) was born June 3, in Northampton, studied at Guy's Hospital and Edinburgh University, later settled in Burra in June 1875. Although never married his sister was his constant companion. After five civic bound years in Burra he became the medical officer at Yatala Labour Prison. He suffered bad health for twenty two years of his forty four years but is remembered for his untiring energy, clear and forceful writings. He was an originator, ingenious, persistent and successful

Thomas Nestor, born 1813 in County Clare, Ireland, arrived on the 'Hooghly' in 1846 and lived in Macclesfield. His wife was Margaret Quinn. Thomas Nestor was an inmate of the Adelaide Destitute Asylum in 1884. (From information provided). A researcher has provided the following information: Thomas Nestor was not an inmate of the Destitute Asylum but his spinster sister, Margaret, was admitted and died there. Thomas' wife was not Margaret Quinn.

Sir Henry Simpson Newland kt., CBE, DSO, MS, FRCS. Born 24 November 1873 and died 1969. He was a distinguished Australian surgeon. In 1919 he became Honorary surgeon to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Adelaide Children's Hospital.

Richard Francis Newland
Richard Francis Newland, Manager of the Bank of Australasia. He was an acting Member of the South Australian Legislative Council in 1847. He was one of 8 children born to Reverend Ridgway William Newland, who with his wife, settled in Encounter Bay in 1839 to become a pioneer clergyman and farmer. Richard Francis Newland died in 1873.

Mrs. C. F. Newman
Mrs C.F. Newman of Water Gully Nursery. (Copy of lent cabinet photo.) Her Christian names were Mary Ann Maria. Her husband, Charles Frederick Newman was founder of the Water Gully Model Nursery in South Australia. There is a photograph of her in Ian Auhl's book, "From Settlement To City".


Elizabeth Webb Nicholls
Mrs Elizabeth Webb Nicholls (1850-1943) is remembered as a social reformer, women's activist, women's suffragist and editor of "Our Federation" the journal of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She played a large part in women getting the vote in South Australia in 1896. She became victorious when her platform for 6.0'clock closing succeeded in 1915. She justified all reforms on temperance and social purity.
