"Viking" at Port Victoria

"Viking" at Port Victoria

Sailing vessel "Viking" at Port Victoria. "The Viking", along with "Olivebank", "Pamir", "Pommern" was loaded with grain during the 1939 season. "Viking" was a steel 4 mast steel barque built in Copenhagen in 1907. She is now preserved in Gothenberg, Sweden. She made five voyages to Port Victoria and Port Lincoln between 1938 - 1948.

[General description] Panoramic view of the township of Port Lincoln. Settlers cottages are dotted all around Boston Bay, where the distant jetty can be seen. Buildings are of stone and fences are rustic post-and-rails or picket. On the left some washing has been left to dry on a fence. [On back of photograph] 'Port Lincoln / Probably between 1860 and 1879 [duplicate copy at PRG 458/1/1/56].

Mr W.J. Blanden driving and an old Port Lincoln resident 'Black Fanny' in Lord Byron's carriage as part of an Australia Day procession in Port Lincoln. Inscription on back of photograph: 'Fanny in Lord Byron's carriage, Australia Day, Port Lincoln, 30/7/15. She said that it made her very tired riding in "that cart". That an Australian black jin should refer to his carriage as a cart is enough to make poor Lord Byron turn in his grave. M.K.B. 7/8/15'. It is belived that the English poet Lord Byron gave his carriage to his friend Lady Charlotte Bacon some years before his death, and that it was brought to Australia by Lady Bacon when she settled in Australia in 1865.

[General description] Full length portrait of Captain John Bishop of Port Lincoln [duplicate copy at PRG 458/1/2/4], showing him standing and resting a hand on the back of a studio chair. He has mutton chop whiskers and is wearing a rumpled three piece suit. He arrived in Port Lincoln in 1839 in command of the 82 ton brig 'Dorset'. He took up land in Port Lincoln and Boston Island and with his family ran the township's first store.

Hall set up for a very early exhibition of paintings by Amy Bishop and her pupils. Amy Bishop, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Bishop of Port Lincoln, was a noted watercolour artist. She lived at Mill Cottage, Port Lincoln.

A collection of 329 photographs of people, events and places on the Eyre Peninsula and west coast of South Australia. Places include Tallala Well, Thevenard, Wirrulla, Poochera, Minnipa, Wudinna, Mount Wedge, Haslam, Carawa, Laura Bay, Perlubie, Venus Bay, Elliston, Coulta, Tod River, Poonindie, Tumby Bay, Verran, Cleve, Arno Bay, Cowell, Kimba, Whyalla, Penong, Iron Knob. The album contains photographs which document the Back to Port Lincoln Carnival celebrations, 7-14 February 1930; photographs taken at Ceduna of the Western Australian Centenary Air Race 1929 (also known as the East- West Air Race); the refuelling stop at Ceduna of the inaugural flight of Air Mail services between Adelaide and Perth 1929 and the 130th Anniversary of the Landing of Matthew Flinders at Boston Bay, 26 February 1932. A number of sailing ships and motor vessels visiting Boston Bay between 1929 and 1933 were photographed, among them Melbourne, Olive Bank, Hougomont, Viking, Phasianella, Minnipa, King Stephen, Moonta, Rhymney, L'Avenir, Grootekerk and the new aircraft carrier HMAS Albatross which was first commissioned in 1929. The photographs include some interesting images of farming and transportation on the far west coast of South Australia, and show glimpses of the lives of Aboriginal people at that time, at Poonindie Mission, Koonibba Mission, Fowler's Bay and Ceduna region. The photographs in this collection were taken by E. F. Derbyshire during the years 1929-1933, when he was a commercial traveller for Clarkson Limited of Adelaide, suppliers of builders' tools and hardware. Father of Elizabeth Anne and Ethela Poonindie Hammond who became the first and second wives, respectively, of Joseph Kemp Bishop, storekeeper in Port Lincoln, and son of Captain John Bishop.
