New Dock, Port Adelaide

The new dock at Port Adelaide with the 'Mallsgate' at anchor. Reputedly a fast ship, she was an iron barque built by R.Williamson & Son at Harrington in 1877. On the 21st July 1889, a few days out from Newcastle, NSW, Australia, bound for San Francisco with a coal cargo, she was wrecked on the Middleton Reef. All the crew survived.

[General description] Port Adelaide in 1844; reproduction of a sketch by Alexander Murray. A dinghy is being rowed ashore from a sailing ship anchored in the deeper water where other shipping and rowing boats can be seen. Another dinghy is moored amongst some mangroves in the foreground. Various huts line the shore, with some more substantial buildings in the distance.

Prince's Hotel, on the corner of North Parade and Mundy Street, Port Adelaide, after the building had been rebuilt in 1872. South Australia Company's Basin, Port Adelaide showing the wharf constructed in 1866-67, with the 'Pekina' and the "Coonatto" discharging. Alongside the "Coonatto" is the hull of the old dredge, converted into a spoon barge. The photograph also shows the Swing Bridge at the entrance to the Basin. In the distance is the old powder magazine (still standing in 1915). On the extreme left is part of Hall's Store. Berthed in the Basin are the Pekina and the Coonatto (on right) Compare with B5646 taken in 1865. This print duplicates part of B 2783.

[General description] Shipping at McLaren Wharf with buildings including the Wharf Hotel (licensee H. Goddard) in the background. This cluster of small sailing ships is probably some of the ketches, known affectionately as the 'Mosquito Fleet' which plied around South Australian coastal waters. Queen's Wharf, Port Adelaide. The building to the left is the Queen's Stores owned by the Government. In 1872 it was rented by Henry Simpson and Son, coal merchant. This photograph was taken from a point a few yards from the ferry steps. Many ships are moored at the wharf or anchored off shore. A lot of the cargo appears to be wool bales.

Aerial view of Pt. Adelaide showing the Jervois Bridge in the foreground. The pylons for the Birkenhead Bridge can be seen in the distance. This bridge was completed in the 1940's and caused the Jervois Bridge to fall into disuse and disrepair. The Jervois Bridge was constructed in 1870 and made it easier to travel between Port Adelaide and the Lefevre Peninsula.
