Joseph Fisher

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Joseph Fisher in three quarter view. He is grey haired with a neatly trimmed beard and wears a rose in his lapel. One of Adelaide's prominent citizens, he was a newspaper owner (The 'Register' and 'Observer'), parliamentarian and benefactor . An astute accountant and businessman, he was director for several firms including the Bank of Adelaide, the Port Adelaide Dock Co. and the South Australian Gas Co. He was an enthusiastic gardener, tending his large garden at Woodfield, Fullarton.

Diesel Engined Motor Bus

[General description] A uniformed man, probably the driver, is standing in front of this double-decker bus which is parked at the MTT depot. It has its back door open, showing its winding staircase. It has probably just been washed after arrival from Sydney. [On back of photograph] 'Diesel engined motor bus / Type of bus installed on the Port Adelaide to Adelaide route / by Municipal tramways Trust / Photo taken in May 1936 / Built in Sydney and brought overland under own power / Top deck is enclosed with glass / Presented by Municipal Tramways Trust'.

Premises of L. Conrad, Butcher, 79 Hindley Street

Leopold Conrad opened his business at 79 Hindley Street on 1st August 1863. Born 4 October 1839 in Hanover, Germany, Leopold arrived in South Australia in February 1858. The business operated from this address until 1886, by 1890 it had expanded to Rundle St., East End Market and Port Adelaide. He died at his East Terrace residence, Helstonleigh on 17 December 1918. The photograph depicts the Conrad family and shoppers outside the Butcher's shop. Carcases of meat are hanging outside the windows of the shop.
