The iron barque 'County of Ayr', 499 tons, in an unidentified port. [County of Ayr iron ship, 499 tons, ON45977, 170.0 x 17.3 x 17.3. Built 1863 (6) C. Connell and Co. Glasgow. Owners R&J Craig, registered Glasgow c.1894 sold to Port Adelaide and eventually to JA Walker. By this time rigged down to a barque. Sold in July 1901 to Messrs. Folder, Barker and Ward and Captain William Tulloch and registered at Hobart. Wrecked 23 October 1905 on Danger Reef, Otago NZ. General work before sale to Australia, usually in the coal trade when owned in Port Adelaide, and used for the transport of Tasmanian timbers until wrecked, after sale to Hobart]

The composite ship 'Glen Osmond', 776 tons, in unidentified port [composite barque, 776 gross tons, later 780 tons. ON56864, 172.3 x 33.5 x 18.0. Built 1867 (8) J Laing, Sunderland. Owners W Stevens, registered London, later WG Elder, registered London, and sometimes owned by AL Elder. Renamed 'Zora' owned by M Ivetta, of Ragusa, Austria-Hungary. Wrecked at Spykerplaat 7 Dec. 1895 on a voyage from Antwerp towards Buenos Aires. Popular passenger vessel in the Adelaide trade in her early days. Fate as yet unlocated. Drops from Lloyds c.1890].


The 'Lammermuir' moored in an unidentified port
The iron ship 'Lammermuir', 1054 tons, moored in an unidentified port (possibly Port Pirie) [iron ship, 1054 gross tons. ON50192, 200.4 x 35.5 x 20.9. Built 1864 (11) West Hartlepool. Owners: J Willis and Son, registered London. Posted missing on a voyage from Port Adelaide to London in 1876. (NB - there were two vessels of this name owned by Willis - Lubbock confuses them and apparently only believed there was one - note by Ron Parsons) In connection with this ship there is the oft told tale about the carpenter's box and 'Lammermuir' being overtaken by 'Orient' to deliver it - see Lubbock's 'Colonial Clippers'. An account of part of her maiden voyage in 'Sea Breezes' Vol. XVII (new series) pg. 408. (Jan. Jun. 1954) 'Colonial Clippers', 'China Clippers' and 'Log of the Cutty Sark']. Date is approximate.

Thomas and Co. Registered Liverpool c.1908 passed to Russian ownership without change of name. Sold and converted into a hulk at Sydney in 1911 and given the name Merion. Taken to Fremantle for Adelaide Steamship Company in 1919 and then to Port Adelaide in 1927. Broken up at Port Adelaide].

A 'South Australian landscape' painted in watercolour on paper heightened with white and gum arabic. The painting shows a large island seen from a coastline with a white horse and its rider, in the foreground, wearing a red jacket and black hat, talking to an Aboriginal man holding a spear. Nearby are three cattle. Some buildings can be seen at left and two vessels are sailing near to shore. On the verso is displayed through the backing piece the inscription: 'Michl. Stark Esqr wh JM Skipper's complts' and a finger print in ink. A label in French has been partly cut off by this inscription.

Photographs of the company's Adelaide premises, personnel, sporting teams and early social events, founders and early directors, interstate premises in Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Northern Territory, centenary celebrations in 1949, and photographs of shipping interest. Also includes two collections of mounted photographs of company staff in formal, informal and work occasions, collected by former staff member, ca. 1949-1980 (originals in Reserve, B&W copies and separate name lists available for reference).


World War 1 and 2 era fundraising button badges
World War One era badges (also known as buttons or 'tinnies') collected by the R.S.L. Most badges were designed and created to be puchased as a fundraising interest, in order to raise money for various factions of the Red Cross. Included are badges created for occasions such as Australia Day, Violet Day, Army Nurses Day, and French Day, and for charity groups including the Red Cross, the Cheer-Up Society, the R.S.A. Building Fund (Returned Soldiers' Association, which later became the R.S.L.), the Wattle Day League, Soldiers' Home, Children's Patriotic League, Nursing Society, and the Y.M.C.A., as well as official peace badges marking the end of the war and various miscellaneous badges including a Christian Endeavour convention, fundraising carnivals and memorial gardens. Also includes some button badges from the inter-war years, 1919-1938, and from the Second World War, and other metal badges from WW1 and WW2. See below for details.


Collection of photographs taken around Adelaide by Theo Bachmann
Collection of glass plates negatives, acetate negatives and photographic prints taken around Adelaide by Theo Bachmann ca.1915-1950. The quarter plate negatives were originally housed in labelled sleeves with an index, featuring the Bachmann and Plunket families, as well as more general scenes. The original envelope number is shown in square brackets after the description of each image, and can be cross-referenced to the index (see B 71826/656). Photos 502-503 and 581-601 are prints only, and photos 515-518, 544-561, and 576-580 are acetate negatives. No negatives with envelopes 525 [no.294] or 536 [no.499]; nos. 564- 565 are half plate stereo negatives; 567-571 are half plate negatives; 572-575 are full plate glass negatives.


The 'Ainsdale' at Port Chalmers
The steel ship 'Ainsdale', 1825 tons, at Port Chalmers. [S. Ship, 1825t. ON97819, 270.0 x 39.8 x 23.4, B. 1890 (10) CJ Bigger, Londonderry, Ireland & Porter, reg. Liverpool Lt Alby Union Carbide Factories Ltd. c.1923/4 became the German screw steamship 'Bollan' reg. Hamburg. Fate unknown. Ref 5 Vol 2 = torpedoed on Feb 15, 1916 but was later towed into port and repaired and engine then added. Also further experience with torpedoes in April 1918. (In Section 4, of Volume 9 is a photograph of this ship but I find no evidence that she was ever owned by JD Newton, as the ship was built after his death and the company did not survive the owner) Volume 9, with the 'Lobo' in Port Adelaide and at Port Chalmers in New Zealand)].
