Battlecruiser at sea off Port Adelaide

Battlecruiser at sea off Port Adelaide

Distant view of what had been thought to be H.M.S. Hood at sea off Port Adelaide during a visit of the British fleet to South Australia in 1924. A researcher states that there is a steam pinnacle in the foreground, not a tug. Another researcher has provided the following informtation: HMS Hood and HMS Repulse (Battlecruisers and huge ships for the time) were in South Australian waters as part of the cruise of the British Special Service Squadron (The Empire Cruise) in March 1924. They were accompanied by a number of Cruisers. The ship in the image is not a Cruiser (a cruiser was smaller) and it is not HMS Hood. HMS Hood’s funnels were not stepped like the ones in the image. The only ship it can possibly be in that location and at that time is HMS Repulse. It is definitely not HMS Hood (have a close look at the funnels of the two ships in side profile) Another notable difference is Hood’s Conning Tower is somewhat different.

Ship at sea off Port Adelaide

Ship at sea off Port Adelaide

Description provided by Searcy: 'H.M.S. Repulse(?) at sea off Port Adelaide during a visit of the British Fleet to South Australia in March 1924'. However, this ship is not likely to be the Repulse but one of the light cruisers that accompanied H.M.S. Hood and H.M.S. Repulse on their 1924 visit to Australia. Believed to one of the light cruisers 'C' class, it is possibly the 'Curlew'. The image is not clear enough to determine which of the cruisers it is. Another researcher states that 'there were no 'C' class cruisers in the 1923-24 Special Services Squadron Empire Cruise. This ship is a 'D' class cruiser; one of the first 3 built as it has a straight bow, not the flared trawler bow of the latter ships of that class. It is either the 'Danae', 'Dauntless' or 'Dragon'. The 'Curlew' escorted the Special Services Squadron in the Atlantic in 1923 before returning to the West Indies station.

Captain Patrick Weir with his sons.

Captain Patrick Weir with his sons.

Composite image of Captain Patrick Weir, Harbour Master at Port Adelaide standing with four young men, two in naval and two in army uniform, next to a flagstaff where they are about to raise the flag. (The garden they are standing in outside a house is possibly their home at Birkenhead.) It was assumed that these were Captain Weir's four sons, but additional information suggests that the soldier on the right is actually Captain Weir's nephew, Ellis Weir. This is supported by a contemporary postcard which reads 'Sir / My cousin Ellis Weir enlisted from South Australia in 1916. We saw in the dailies on Tuesday that he has been wounded. His father, his next of kin, is in Leeds England. We - my father, who is his uncle, and family - are his only relatives in Australia. His home has been with us, and we feel anxious about him'. (Signature has been removed.) The daughter of Felix Christie, (one of the sons) believes that the photograph was taken at the family home in Albert Street, Semaphore and that the added figure on the left hand is Alex. Ales served in the Navy in World War One and was an engineer - lieutenant in WW2. The other son in navy clothes is Felix. He did not go away to war but he might have been in the Naval reserve. The two soldiers are Patrick and a cousin who lived with the family name Ellis.
