Looking towards the Flour Mill, from Dr. Blood's. Dr Blood was the first general practitioner in Kapunda and later Mayor of Kapunda. Township of Kapunda in the 1860s. It was established after copper was found in 1842 by Francis Dutton and Charles Bagot. Mining began in 1844 and continued until 1879. The railway line from Adelaide was opened in 1860. The flour mill at nearby Allendale North was able to produce the finest silk dressed flour due to the installation of an additional boiler and superior silk dresser.

Identified as the 'Machine Gun Corps at Kapunda' it is suggested by a researcher that the men are part of the 23rd Light Horse (as evidenced by the number badge on the hats). The photograph appears in The Chronicle (Adelaide, SA) under the banner 'Light Horsemen Under Training: The Camp at Kapunda' (1914, March 28).

James Smith Pearce, 3rd man forward right wing, Kapunda Football Club. Second son of Hon. James Pearce, Kapunda. Kapunda Football Club was founded in 1866 by copper miners. It is the oldest football club in the world to enjoy an uninterrupted identity.

According to a researcher, Archdeacon Hornabrook was at this church from 1894-1905 and the child is probably one of his sons. [Leonard Charles Soward was born in 1895. Archdeacon Hornabrook's given names were Charles Soward].
