Oriental Hotel

Oriental Hotel, Rundle Street, south side, corner Gawler Place, 20 March 1964. Rundle Street frontage 15-1/2 yards, Gawler Place frontage 33 yards. This five storey former hotel has the first two floors built of stone and the upper three floors of painted rendered brick. It displays imitation stone coursing and leafy scroll pattern on panels between the upper windows. A parapet conceals the roof. It has a cantilevered verandah above the ground floor and a second balcony on the second floor which feature cast iron lacework to the balustrades. The Oriental Hotel stood on this site from 1915-1966. Previously the hotel had been known by various other names including Suffolk Inn, Saracen's Head and Hamburg

Grenfell Street at the north west corner of Gawler Place. This view shows the "Register" newspaper offices. The three storey stone building houses Goode Durrant and Company. Charles Henry Goode was a merchant, draper, businessman, politician and philanthropist in the early days of South Australia. On the Gawler Place side sits Smith and Hawkes, a cricket and Sports Depot and Cawthorne and Company

[General description] Grenfell Buildings (erected in 1900), with busy intersection, pedestrians, cars and Police officer (wearing a shako cap) on point duty. The Commercial Bank occupies the corner section with the circular balcony. Long cantilever verandahs run down either side of the buildings. Note the ornate tram wire supports. [On back of photograph] 'Grenfell Buildings / Acre 143 / South west corner of Grenfell Street and Gawler Place /July 11, 1928 / Gawler Place frontage of Grenfell Buildings is 44 yards / Grenfell Street frontage is 36.5 yards'.

This view was taken before the erection of the Onslow buildings, on the corner of Pirie Street and Gawler Place, around 1882. Pirie Street, Adelaide, south side, west of Gawler Place, showing the Woman's Christian Temperance Union building. The South Australian branch of the W.C.T.U. was founded in 1889, so this building has been recently completed. Its appearance was unchanged until 1925 when it was demolished. See B 4716 for a view of the new building. The near side of the building is 32 yards west of Gawler Place and its frontage is 22 yards.

The studio offers classes which include waltz, swing, cha cha, rumba, mambo, tango, twist and ballroom dancing

[General description] This neo-classical building features decorative balustrading on the parapet and upstairs balconies. Above the main arched doorway on both floors the keystone is carved with a human face. The building was used by the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, South Australia from 1884. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 233 / Flinders Street, north side / Part of Earl of Zetland Hotel / About 1890 / Extreme left is 7 yards east of Gawler Place. Telegraph post on right is 30 yards east of Gawler Place.' (Another hand) 'For view of this building in 1958 see B 14058.'

Bible Hall located on the north western corner of Flinders Street and Gawler Place. Note on back of photograph states "1884 Corner Flinders Street and Freeman Street (now Gawler Place). This Bible Hall and Tract Depot was opened by H Hussey and is fully described in his book "Colonial Life and Christian Experience", page 453. Before being taken over by Mr Hussey the premises were used as a receiving depot by the Waterworks Office. Now the site of Motors Limited". Power cable poles are standing outside the building.

The right side of Day's premises is 62 yards west of Gawler Place, and the left side of Stevens' premises is 41 yards west of Gawler Place. Compare with B 1854. A Ladies and Gents Hairdesser stands on the corner of the building. To the east at Number 48-50 stands AA Dawson's New and Second hand Tyres. Pedestrians are walking along Gawler Place.

Wakefield Street, south side, Willard Hall. November 2nd 1936, right side is 2 1/3 yards west of east side of Gawler Place. Site of Willard Hall's right side is 2.75 yards west of the east side of Gawler Place. Willard Hall was previously St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. In 1928 an old bell was found in the tower of Willard Hall. This relic was probably the first bell cast in Adelaide and made to the order of the session of St Andrew's Kirk. The bell was made at a foundry on North Terrace and the maker had embellished it with his name and date, Pybus, March 5th, 1845.
