A note written on the back of the photograph in 1969 states that the pine tree in the garden is now the highest tree in Gawler.

The foundation stone for the church was laid April 2, 1850 and services commenced April 15, 1855. A larger church was built on the same site in 1881 under the administration of the Carmelite Fathers

Main Street. The Gawler Institute, seen the centre of this photograph, was officially opened with a concert in 1857. During 1858 the Oddfellows Hall was built in Murray Street and the Institute Committee rented rooms on the ground floor. The clock tower on the Post Office can also be seen.
