North corner Hindley and King William Streets. The far side of Moss's Loan Bank is 27-1/2 yards north of Hindley Street. A dramatic rescue is taking place in the building on the corner of Hindley Street and King William Street. Fire has broken out and a fireman can be seen with a person draped over his shoulder. they are about to descend from the third storey via a series of ladders. Firemen can be seen on the roof of the premises. The building appears to be a tobacconist shop and Alfred Augustus Stump's photographic studio. A large crowd has gathered to watch the drama unfold. The fire broke out in December 1900 and gutted the studio.

This building at 71 King William Street also houses the offices of Bray and Hackett Solicitors, various wine merchants including Penfold, Oaklands. R Barrett House and Land Estate Agents.

Grenfell Street, left side of Grasby's is 24 yards west of Chesser Street. Staerkner and Fischer is on the east corner of Gawler Place. Buildings seen include: JW Grasby and Company who are wholesale grocers, importers and merchants. Nearby stands A and WD Thomas who are bakers and grocers. The business was established in 1846. For a view of A & WD Thomas' site in 1957 see B 13897. At number 18 is the small doorway to W Lucas tailor and outfitter. Felstead and Company is the importers of British, American, continental merchandise. Guardian Fire and Life Insurance, Royal Exchange Assurance, Thames and Mersey Marine Insurance all share the four storey building next door. A shop selling pianos and organs follows and then Staerkner and Fischer stands on the corner of Gawler Place. The buildings can be seen continuing along the south side of Grenfell Street as it crosees King William Street into Currie Street. The intersection of Gawler Place and Grenfell Street is busy with pedestrians. A fire hydrant, hitching post, horses and carriages all make up this scene in Grenfell Street in 1901.

Waymouth Street, south side, Waymouth Street frontage is 19 yards and Bentham Street frontage is 43 yards. See also B 4765, B 12983 and B 12984. This imposing four storey corner building houses Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society Limited. Woodards House, built in 1928-1929, is an outstanding example of a building constructed in the Inter-War Commercial Palazzo style. It shows the public style of F Kenneth Milne, a prominent South Australian architect, who regarded this building as one of his most important works. Constructed as the South Australian head office of the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society, the building reflects the commercial expansion and consolidation of the capital city centre during the Inter-War period.

Bentham Street, Adelaide, west side, looking towards Franklin Street, on the 9th April, 1925. The extreme right is about 49 yards south of Waymouth Street, and the left side of the three storey buildings on the right is 71 yards south of Waymouth Street. The five storey portion of these buildings was erected by the S.A. Farmers' Co-operative Union in 1923-25, replacing their previous premises which were damaged by fire on the 21st February 1923. Flinders Street, south side, 8th May 1935 showing the premises of Thompson & Harvey after a fire. The fire had gutted the premises leaving only the street facade. The London Hotel next door at Number 107 Flinders Street was managed by Miss Annie Maria Campbell from 1919 -1941.

Mills Terrace, east side, February 23rd 1937, right side of building is 45 yards north of Barnard Street and frontage is 15 yards. This shows the fire damage to Dr JA Bonnin's house at 48 Mills Terrace North Adelaide shortly after the fire of 19 February, 1936. A new roof was built in 1937.

The photographic composite (mosaic) B 8235/1 holds 708 portraits. A further 27 in the upper left section are missing due to damage. (An unnamed portrait has been placed in the gap at B 8235 23E, instead of the portrait of John Moore missing due to damage .) A newspaper article that refers to the donation of the mosaic to the Public Library of South Australia in 1894 by Mr CH Hussey of Port Elliot states that it was damaged when Duryea's studio was destroyed by fire on 18 April 1875. (The Advertiser, 17 November 1910.) Mr Hussey's portrait is at B 8235/1 1A.

Picnic train with open trucks conveying men, women and children to an annual picnic believed to be one being held by the Manchester Unity Lodges at Penrose Park Silverton. According to a researcher, seven years later this same train was attacked by two Turkish patriots. The researcher recalls: 'My Great Aunty was on the train when the "Turks" opened fire, she remembered the event well. She was a primary school child at the time. She remembers seeing "Joe the Ice" and all the kids waving to him in excitement because they thought they were about to get ice-cream. Then she remembers being fired at and everyone getting as low as possible in the train to avoid the bullets. After returning home she remembers her neighbour taking off her hat and finding a bullet hole in it, at which point she fell down in a faint'.

The album contains photographs relating primarily to the life of John Wilson Hursthouse (1913-1945) including family camping holidays to the South-East, Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula between 1925-1930; schooling at Queen's School, North Adelaide, and Roseworthy Agricultural College, Boy Scouts, Army training at Kapunda Military camp, shearing at Middle Camp near Cowell and Elbow Hill (1934-1936); wheat harvesting at Gum Park, Yongala 1937; and training as an RAAF pilot at Parafield Aerodrome. The album includes a family portrait of John (Jack) with his parents Calvert Fearon Hursthouse and Lilian Ethel (nee Preshaw), and his siblings Helen Mary and Harold Richmond (Dick). Another photograph includes his son David as a child.
