Album 1 contains images 1-76; album 2 contains images 77-107. An index to the numbered plates appears at the front of each album. The Indexes have been photographed as images 1A and 77A. The wording of the captions (seen above) is taken directly from the indexes. Note that the numbered captions for photographs 50-52, 60-75, in volume 1 have been pasted against the wrong photographs. For this reason all photographs in the two albums have been digitised without their corresponding captions. Plates 97-98. Lake Deborah, dry salt lake, in volume 2 are missing.

Diary of Helen Una Grieve

Diary of Helen Una Grieve

A leather-bound diary which follows Helen Una Grieve's life between July 28th, 1909 and September 20th, 1909. The diary contains extremely detailed entries including 117 (D 7872(L)/1 - D 7872(L)117), mostly labeled, photographs, referring to handwritten diary entries. There is an interesting inclusion of pressed native flowers (D 7872(L)/118 - D 7872(L)/130), which have been carefully labeled and attached to the last pages of the diary, along with a feather and an example of scoured wool from Yancannia Station. In addition to the diary, the collection also includes a letter written from Morden on 28th December (no year given) by Tarella, and a telegram to 'Miss Grieve' from 'Milne', 1909. Grieve enjoyed a country lifestyle and was witness to her family's sheep and cattle station dealings as well as camel trains across the desert areas between Adelaide and Broken Hill. It is most likely the author of the diary is also the photographer. The photographs record the contemporary environment including costume, homesteads and garden designs. Grieve has effectively captured her experience through her comments and especially through her unique photographs. The photographer shows competent photographic technique and many examples are perspectival in composition. There are also included sentimental and affectionate photographic depictions of pets and other animals. Helen Una Grieve refers to herself as the "country girl" or the "girl" throughout the diary. Some terminology, which is offensive by today's standards, reflects usage at that time. [Married name was Gibson.]

Photograph album of the Parker and Davidson Families

Photograph album of the Parker and Davidson Families

The album shows aspects of station life at various sheep properties in the far north east of South Australia and the Broken Hill region, among them Buckalow, Bimbowrie, Oulnina Park, Telechie, Burta, Topar, Tantallon and Yalcowinna as well as visits to other stations in New South Wales and Victoria namely Morundah, Widgeongully and Tolarno. Three young women thought to be Grace Langloh Parker (1895-1987) and her sisters Wilga Maud (1898-?) and Una Geraldine Davidson, nee Parker (1901-1986) are central to many of the photographs and it may be that the album was compiled by Grace Parker. Holiday visits were made to Victor Harbor, Port Elliot, Inman Valley, Second Valley, Mount Gambier, Portland Victoria, Sydney and Tasmania. A number of photographs relate to the BHP towns, Iron Knob and Broken Hill. Two of the Parker daughters, thought to be Wilga and Grace, accompanied their Mother on a voyage from Sydney to the Celebes and Java in 1926, including sightseeing at Macassar in the Celebes, the Mount Bromo Volcano, Sand Sea, Borobodur, and other places in Java with the homeward voyage via Singapore, Port Darwin, Thursday Island and Cairns.
