Group of young men, possibly Customs staff, near a memorial erected in 1884 to H.W.H. Stevens, R.C.S. Buckland, J.R. Hineston; some carry tennis racquets and two dogs, a terrier and a dalmatian, are in the foreground. According to researcher Dr. Matthew Stephen, this image depicts a 'mock' memorial. All the men mentioned on it are actually alive at the time. It might be a 'present' of some kind, a special occasion from the Palmerston 'lads'.

Heinrich family album, compiled by Ilona Oppenheim from loose family photographs. Notes found on the verso of photographs are noted in the caption in inverted commas. Topics include life at Hermannsburg Mission in the Northern Territory in the nineteen twenties, with photographs of some Aboriginal people and visitors to Hermannsburg, including scientists, government officials and tourists. Photos 293-295 are restricted from view pending assessment of Aboriginal content. These images include 293. Ceremonial tjuringa stones of the Hermannsburg area (restricted); 294. 'Manangananga' sacred cave (restricted); 295. 'Holy cave 17 April 1929 (Dad's birthday)'. Large group of Aboriginal people from the Hermannsburg Mission gathered at a sacred spot (restricted). Photos 296-302 have not been digitised. These are duplicated elsewhere in other Heinrich albums or lantern slides.

Ray Parer and John McIntosh in the England-Australia Air Race, Bandar Abbas

Ray Parer and John McIntosh in front of their DH9 G-EAQM 'PD'. They arrived at at Bandar Abbas on 5 March 1920 and left the next day. The Airco DH.9 with Lieutenant Ray Parer as pilot and John McIntosh as co-pilot, departed Hounslow 8 January 1920 (after the Vickers Vimy crew had already successfully completed their flight), and landed at Darwin 2 August 1920. They were the first single-engined aircraft to complete a flight from Engalnd to Australia and although ineligible for the competition - their flight having taken 206 days and the Vimy crew already having been successful - they were awarded a £1000 consolation prize.

Photographs relating to George Dankel, comprising early farming scenes and including Aboriginal people and Aboriginal dwellings. One of the images has been positively identified as created by D. Darian Smith, with the remainder strongly attributed to the photographer. On comparison with SLSA images of Hermannsburg and the Aranda (Arrernte/Aranta), it is possible that the location of the images is Alice Springs, Terowie, Finke River and McDonnell Ranges area (see PRG 1559/8/1-295). One image has been withdrawn from access and viewing online (PRG 638/5/16) : Unknown location, a group on twelve young Aboriginal children standing with four men, ca. 1930 (negative, black and white, 9 x 14 cm). Includes captioned photographs of the kangaroo hunting expedition near Lake Albert in November 1867 at which Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, was a guest. Other items in the albums include photographs and copies of sketches of Aboriginal people, and images of surveyors and land selectors in the Northern Territory. A number of unrelated clippings and images have been added to the album, possibly by Daly's children.

Alice Springs (Mparntwe) Telegraph Station marks the original site of the first European settlement in South Australia. It was established in 1871 to relay messages between Darwin and Adelaide and linking with an underwater cable network to London providing the first communication between Australia and England. In 1874 twenty five square miles around the station was procalimed a reserve and the town in the middle was named Stuart. The Telegraph Station precinct contained the following outbuildings - policemen's quarters, harness and buggy sheds, stationmaster's residence, battery room, blacksmith's shop and a kitchen-mess room. These buildings are shown in the photograph which was taken from the east side.

[General description] The Alice Springs Telegraph Station with its group of outbuildings, constructed from local stone. It is set against the picturesque MacDonnell Ranges near a permament waterhole named Alice Springs after the wife of Charles Todd who was the head of the overland telegraph project at the time. The station is one of twelve repeater stations on the line between Adelaide and Darwin. Established in 1872 it operated for 60 years. [On back of photograph] 'Telegraph Station, Alice Springs / c. 1900 / compare with B 8349 which is stated to be 1896'.

Telegraph Station and stockyard, Alice Springs. The stone station and outbuildings were established in 1872 to relay messages between Darwin and Adelaide. It was one of twelve stations along the Overland Telegraph Line. The first postmaster was Johannes Mueller.

Photo was very likely taken during Lord Kintore's survey when he travelled from Darwin to Adelaide along the Overland Telegraph line, arriving in Alice Springs 8 May 1891.

Storehouse and assistant storekeepers residence showing the use of logs and thatch to make buildings. Escape Cliffs Settlement was the site of the fourth attempt to establish a settlement in the Northern Territory. It was situated near the mouth of the Adelaide River, north east of Darwin. It was abondoned in 1867 following conflicts with the local Marananggu people.
