[General description] In a clearing in the foreground is the Government camp which is a mixed collection of buildings in various states of repair. Some are of corrugated iron, earlier ones of timber. The Government residence on the hill on the left has a flagstaff and appears to be having building work done. There are other well built houses or public buildings in the distance. [General description] A Banyan tree showing its aerial prop roots. The Banyan starts its life as an ephiphyte when its seeds lodge in crevices of a host tree. When mature it can cover a large area. [On back of photograph] 'Banyan tree / Botanical Gardens / Palmerston / 1887'.

Palmerston. Sub. Inspector of Police's Quarters (Mr Paul Foelsche) After arriving in Palmerston and realising there was no Police Station Foelsche and his six troopers built one. His first residence was a two room tin hut which was later replaced by a three roomed house in Mitchell Street. Paul Foelsche was Keeper of the Palmerston Gaol from 1872 - 1874. The quarters were built on the site of what was later to be the Government Administrative Offices, almost facing the Cable Quarters.

Palmerston. The Gaol - built 1871 - first prisoners' cells built in the Northern Territory. Later Fannie Bay Gaol was built between 1882-1883. The original gaol was built between the Customs House and what was in 1930, the Police Station. The gaol was constructed from stone and had two doors and no windows. A water tank had pipes leading frfom the tin roof.

Palmerston. Police Station which was very close to the Police Station erected subsequently. The wooden building which had window frames with vertical shutters to catch any breezes had a galvanised tin roof and a large water tank. The office had been patched with canvas at one end.

Government Residence and Police Station at Darwin. The gaol was established in 1883. Paul Heinrich Matthias Folsche became the Government Resident in 1870. On his arrival he and his five troopers built a police station. Later he was the Keeper of the Palmerston Gaol.

First Government Experimental Gardens, near Palmerston (about 1.5 miles out of Darwin) The photograph shows a small brick building next to a smaller wooden hut. The property is fenced and many banana palms can be seen among the eucalypts. Five gardeners with tools stand near the hut.

Grave of John W. Ogilvie Bennett, and Richard Hazard, both members of Goyder's Survey Party. Goyder was sent by the government of South Australia to lay out street plans for a capital to be named Palmerston. Bennett was a draftsman and died from a spear attack and Richard Hazard was a cook who died from rheumatism

This photograph is probably from the Easter Monday race meeting (April 14th) at Fannie Bay, the meeting being reported in some newspapers as 'the first Northern Territory races'.
