Railway Accident

Railway accident on the Port Adelaide Line, with Governor Daly on board: a sketch. Notes on the back of the photograph state " accident to special train on the Port Adelaide side line, with Governor on board, April 13, 1865. Original sketch by DD Daly. See Parliamentary Paper Number 55 of 1865. Original in Illustrated Melbourne Post 18 May 1865, page 65" Note under the photograph states "from a sketch taken on the spot by His Excellency's Aide-de-Camp, Dominick Daniel Daly, esquire" The sketch depicts two de-railed carriages of the steam train on their sides with lots of people trying to help extract the passengers. Many people are running towards the accident with their hands in the air. It was recorded that Governor Daly was being conveyed to visit the warship 'Falcon' at Largs Bay. A 'flash American' train driver who was unused to the repair work being made to a portion of the track took the journey at high speed, derailing two carriages. Governor Daly refused to return on the train and came back on a horse.

Flinders Street, Adelaide, south side, on March 31st, 1925. Adelaide Motors Limited premises were built in 1924. For additions to this building made in 1925, see B 7368. The left side of the Adelaide Motors building is 82 yards west of Daly Street and its right side is 100 yards west of Daly Street. The extreme left of picture is 64 yards west of Daly St. For a view of cottages formerly occupying this site, see B 1839.

This firm manufactures plate, sheet and ornamental glass, mirrors, leadlights and motor screens. Note tramline and ornamental tram standard. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 290 / Wakefield Street, north side, east corner of Daly Street / 12 June 1934 / Site of Abbott's: Daly Street frontage is 33 yards and Wakefield Street frontage is 32.5 yards' (Another hand) 'Demolished in 1934 / Compare with B 6625'.

The photograph shows the three storey Abbott's Glassware and Paints business on the north side of Wakefield Street and the east corner of Daly Street. The Abbott's building was erected in 1934. Compare this photograph with B 6466. For alterations made to the east side of Abbotts in 1938 see B 8184.

A dispensary can be seen further down Port Road and even some wagons are visible on the dirt road heading for Adelaide

The telegraph pole in centre is about 75 yds. from Daly St. The two cottages with the light coloured roof in the centre of photograph were demolished in 1924. [General description] Two bluestone cottages in the process of being demolished in 1925. The cottages stood on the south side of Flinders Street near Daly Street. The cottages had central front doors with windows either side, verandahs and picket fences. [On back of photograph] Acre 282 Flinders Street, south side. Dec. 14th, 1925. Photographed while the cottages were in course of demolition. Left side of the cottages is 33 1/2 yards west of Daly Street. Frontage of cottages: 16 1/2 yards. On the right a group of boys wearing knickerbockers are standing to attention and holding homemade swords.
