Postcard collection of Emily Sophia Groom

A collection of postcards and greeting cards collected by Emily Sophia Groom (nee Grovermann) during the early 1900s, with many cards depicting early SA. The inscription inside the album states "E S Grovermann, Blyth, 29-5-1906". Emily Groom was born in 1877 at Clare and married Harry Rowe (his mother's surname) Groom in 1931. Emily was aged 45 when she married and did not have children of her own. Locations in the postcards include Blyth and Clare, Tanunda, Gumeracha, Victor Harbor and Port Elliot, Adelaide, North Adelaide, and assorted interstate and international locations [See individual records for selected digitised postcards, which may be viewed online].

Old Anglican church at Streaky Bay with the new church in the background. A note on the back of the photograph says " This is the old Anglican Church in front of the new one in the background. The original Church was erected in 1869 and the first service was conducted by Mr Oliver Keble Richardson. The first clerygman to visit Streaky Bay was the Rev Webb later on he resided at Clare". The Anglican Church of Saint Augustine of Hippo was officially opened on Sunday 16 June, 1912 with a dedication service in Streaky Bay. The original church was then disused and eventually demolished. The new Gothic church stands on a site adjoining the parsonage and has a tower of over fifty feet.

Papers of the Wurm Family

Records spanning three generations of the family of Louis and Julia Wurm from Stansbury, including: a photograph of Julia and Louis Wurm and their baby Ellie, ca.1861. On the back of the photo is what is possibly the only known pictorial record of John Howell book shop at No. 4 Rundle Street. There are letters from friends, to the young Ellie, and letters from her fiance Richard Yeo who was assigned to the bank at Yongala in 1879. Amongst other things he describes the bank building where they were to live. It seems that Richard remained at Yongala and his wife Ellie moved to Unley with their three children. Their youngest child, nicknamed Wally, enlisted in WW1 and his letters from France and the front line and from England when injured are included in this group. Also comprising obituaries and newspaper clippings relating to the Wurm and Yeo families in South Australia, family member calling cards, invitations, and a poem sent to Ellie Wurm and written by Dean Russell. Bungaree Chapel

Brinkworth trip : September 1913. Bungaree Chapel built by George Hawker on his property. The church is the only building on the farm actually designed by an architect. Edward Hamilton, a colonial architect at the time, was also George's brother-in-law. was opened 1864 by Bishop Short. The chapel has a stringybark roof which was covered by iron in the mid 1880's. George handed Saint Michael's Church over to the parish in 1871. The Church has handpainted stainglass windows.

Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.
